EverQuest

Greetings, traveler. (OOC: here's the technical banter)

I am link outMoste, soon to be Moste Tunariel the short name for Moon Steer. I am a Druid born in the tree city of Kelethin in the vast Greater Faydark forest. On link outNorrath, of course. Which I reach from Earth through the Firiona Vie portal (OOC: server).

The land of Norrath is a fair Material Plane in the Multiverse made out of several continents (Antonica, Faydwer, Odus and Kunark) separated by oceans sprinkled with islands. Oh, Norrathians recently acquired magical access to one of their moons, Luclin, but since I have not yet explored the land, there was no need for me to acquire the moon magic. There are also portals to portions of other Planes within the Multiverse, like the Plane of Fear or Plane of Fire, but I heard of those only in legends, as I've yet to gain a name for myself in this world.

On Norrath there is a continuous conflict between the forces of Good and Evil. As a Druid I am Neutral to those forces and I attempt to make my friends who lean in one direction or the other to see the emptiness of either concept. Be that as it may, there are monsters to fight, quests to follow and trades to learn.

Here I will chronicle my life. When my travels on Earth or Norrath spare me the time, that is. Remember, I'm a Wood Elf Druid, and most of the tricks mentioned below work best with that trade/racial combination.

  • started my life in the forest city of Kelethin, smack in the middle of the Greater Faydark.
  • joined the Soldiers of Tunare trade guild.
  • died numerous times until I learned a few tricks (see below).
  • met Karlyana, a bard with quite some lore about Norrath. she's part of the Circle of Luminance.
  • joined the Circle of Luminance player guild. Breezee invited me, Snowleaf is the leader.
  • after 10 seasons, I had to leave Norrath because I was taking frustratingly long to move from one area to another.
  • got reborn in Kelethin. This time around the magic of the world held together better.
  • found that pushing slightly the Int at the expense of some Wis gave me an edge in learning skills much faster
  • set my magicks so I could Forage continuously - so no need to spend money on food. (OOC: put all the skills abailable on buttons, arrange the first hot button set to contain melee, foraging, fishing, luring spell -snare or low mana offensive spell- fall-back spell -powerful offensive spell or snare- and the inventory slot with a container for small items where I keep foraged stuff)
  • all the while I was doing quests to increase my faction rating and working on my Smithing, Brewing, Tailoring, Baking with loot and foraged stuff
  • hunting low critters around the newbie hill until my 4th season; then at the orc hill and small game in ButcherBlock
  • saving money for spells and containers, didn't buy any armor, only a good splintering club (1HB)
  • got lucky and was given a good magical weapon by Indi (the runed bokken for which I never found a better replacement)
  • sold bat wings to older people 1pp per stack
  • saved all bone chips and Crushbone belts in the bank
  • when I had no more space, went to Kaladim where I got my faction high with the clerics on the bone chip quest and with the warriors on the CBbelt quest. That also gave me decent leather armor and quite some money.
  • since Snowleaf dissolved the Circle of Radiance guild, we, most of the other members created another one: Dawn Rising.
  • about my 9th season I went to Steamfont Mountains, in the middle, where the clockwork dragon skeleton is guarded by undead. Good idea to bind yer spirit in Ak'Anon while rampaging through here.
  • also the micro servos from the runaway clockworks are worth 5pp or more to rangers working on their bowyering (Fletching) skill.
  • Ak'Anon's a good place for working on skills, but expensive because I found it tough to get faction with the Gnomes. So buy yer supplies in Kelethin.
  • around it's a good idea to go to Rivervale and shoot up the already high faction with the quests around the Druid guild there. Excellent place to fish -even hunt fish- and learn to Swim. Just make sure you do go back for the good experience with the undead in the middle of Steamfont.
  • after the 14th season I started roaming Antonica in earnest. The Lightstones from the will'o'wisps bring good money, and the Greater ones are needed by the Gypsies in North Karana and the book you get in return is worth much more. 7-9pp. Need a magic weapon for the wisps, tho.
  • get a Stein of Moggok and hold onto it whenever yer practicing any skill - for speedy learning. The quest for it will take ye to three of the Norrath continents.
  • season 15 or so, with Endure Fire and Expulse Summoned in yer mind, go to Lavastorm Mountains. Dervishes drop ore, basilisks drop eggs, and most critters drop quite some money and expensive ingredients. Also foraged ash in all forms is needed by Rogues.
  • season 17 - my current age - has me wondering between Lavastorm and Everfrost, with quite some catch at the bottom of the HighPass in East Karana. I'm also planning to get the Testament of Vanear and thereby increase my wisdom...
  • but I'm also planning to leave Norrath again, because Earth duties leave me no time...

  • Technical OOC:

    Everquest.
Huge development and support teams, huge .net following. But this is the game which convinced me to start developing WARPe in earnest. Besides being pricey, it doesn't run on pretty good systems; their not-so-state-of-the-art graphics engine, though 3D, requires only specific chipsets in your video card, so after paying like CAD100 for having the game, I could not play it. Imagine the frustration. Well, if you got the money and the hardware for it, go ahead.
Update: After updating my system first with RAM, then with a new video card, I got the behemoth running. I played sparsely for a 4 months (my studies and family don't leave me any entertainment time, which I have to steal from either of them - or from my rest time.) My opinions are mixed. The community is great, area available for exploration and the arsenal of items and quests are huge, they have reasonable allowance for PvP and the play is quite well balanced (for context, I played as a Druid Wood Elf). BUT!!!

  • Mind-boggling, for an on-line only game: none of the software bits are available for download!! One has to pay handling, mailing, custom fees, etc...
  • So it doesn't pay to upgrade. Better get all the available expansion packs at once.
  • They have huge loading times, between zones, when the crit dies and at startup time.
  • Mana recovery is a time-busting hassle (unless you happen to be an Enchanter or be groupped with one).
  • The quests are horribly static, made challenging only by brute force: spawning time and frequency for key quest chars.
  • The recipes for the trades are hilariously unreal, which transforms any research into a hit-and-miss combinatorial ordeal.
  • You can't modify the world... except by leaving yer corpse around.
  • No worldly possessions except for inventory and bank account. Having a house would be nice.
  • ...and I could go on, but the drift should be clear...
